Watering Basics: How to Keep Cannabis Happy
Water is life for cannabis, but both too much and too little can slow growth or stress your plants. Learning how, when, and how much to water is one of the most important skills for any grower.
💧 How Often Should You Water?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — it depends on:
- Pot size – small pots dry out faster than big ones.
- Growth stage – seedlings need less than mature plants.
- Medium – soil holds water longer than coco or hydro.
- Environment – hot, dry rooms make plants thirsty.
Pro Tip: Always check the top inch of soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water. If it’s still damp, wait.
🌱 How Much Water?
- Seedlings: Just enough to keep soil slightly moist. Overwatering is a common mistake.
- Vegetative stage: Water until it starts to drain out the bottom of the pot. This ensures the whole root ball gets hydrated.
- Flowering stage: Plants drink more — water thoroughly, but avoid waterlogging.
Pro Tip: Lift the pot before and after watering. It’s a simple way to judge how much your plant needs.
⚠️ Common Watering Mistakes
- Overwatering – causes yellow leaves, slow growth, and root rot.
- Underwatering – plants droop, dry leaves appear, growth slows.
- Cold or chlorinated water – can shock roots. Use room-temperature, filtered water if possible.
- Ignoring runoff – water should drain freely to avoid salt buildup.
🌟 Pro Grower Gems
- Water with intention: Focus on deep watering rather than frequent light sprinkles.
- Let plants tell you: Drooping leaves usually mean water stress, but know the difference between over and underwatering.
- pH matters: Water pH should be around 6.0–6.8 for soil, 5.8–6.2 for coco, and 5.5–6.0 for hydro. Healthy roots = happy plants.
Watering is simple once you learn your plant’s rhythm. With practice, you’ll instinctively know when your cannabis needs a drink.
